What is the gallbladder and why do I need it?

Minimally invasive gallbladder surgery explained

There are several different surgical procedures for removing your gallbladder. There is a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, robotic gallbladder surgery, and single site robotic surgery. All of these are considered minimally invasive, as they all require only small incisions instead of the traditional open procedure that requires a much larger opening.

Laparoscopic surgery is done by making four small incisions in your abdomen. Your abdomen is then distended with carbon dioxide to enhance visibility. Dr. Rifenbery will then insert a camera into one of the incisions, and use the other small incisions to insert instruments to free the gallbladder from the abdomen. There is still a chance that if complications arise, he may need to convert to an open procedure.

Robotic surgery is one of the newest additions to minimally invasive surgery and offers a very precise surgery because the robotic arms can maneuver the instruments in smaller areas.
