Drain Care

Surgical Drain Home care

Surgical drains are used to remove extra fluid that builds up after surgery. Drainage is usually bright red, but gradually turns yellowish pink. Drains are removed when the amount decreases.

Keep the skin around the drain dry and covered daily with a clean dressing. Adding topical antibiotic where the drain enters the skin is a good idea. Please avoid showers or baths. Contact our office for skin redness, invreased pain, cloudy drainage or a bad smell. 253-572-7120

Empty and record the drainage everyday, or as often as needed. Open the bulb cap and read the markings on the side of the bulb to check the volume, and record below. Empty the drainage down a sink or toilet. Compress the bulb and replace the cap.

Please bring this record to your next appointment.
