Gastrectomy Diet

Post-Gastrectomy and Anti-Dumping Diet

Following stomach surgery, the altered anatomy can have serious consequences. Rapid transit of food into the intestine can result in nausea, diarrhea and abdominal cramping pain, known as the "dumping syndrome". This occurs when concentrated sugars reach the jejunum without being first broken down by the action of the stomach. The Post Gastrectomy diet is used to slow the rapid passage of food from the stomach to the intestine, and alleviate the dumping syndrome.

Individual tolerances vary greatly, but the following principles usually apply:

  • Small, frequent feedings. 6 to 8 meals a day.
  • High protein and fat content for tissue growth and to increase calories.
  • A protein food should be served with each meal.
  • Omission of simple sugars.
  • In some cases, milk and other dairy products may be restricted.
  • Fluids to be taken only between meals (30 minutes after a meal).
  • Avoid extremely hot or cold foods beverages.
  • Because this is a highly individualized diet, each patient will progress at his own rate.
