Non Surgical Treatment of Hemorrhoids

Mild to moderate hemorrhoid disease can often be treated without surgery.  The goal of this treatment is to increase the volume and weight of your bowel movements.  These larger and more formed stools will dilate the anal canal, and often can result in shrinking hemorrhoid tissue.  If this conservative treatment is not successful, surgery is always an option.

Increasing the fiber in your diet can have a positive effect in reducing hemorrhoids.  Try the diet link above for information on a high fiber diet.  Fiber from a variety of sources produces the most benefit.  Minimize refined foods and eat more whole grain cereals, fresh fruits and raw vegetables.  The simple addition of bran cereal each morning can have dramatic effects.

  • Benifiber, Metamucil, FiberCon, Citrucel, etc

These bulk-forming agents are available over the counter at grocery stores and pharmacies.  Please use one of these (following the package instructions) 2-3 times a week.  If you use these agents too frequently, then a laxative effect may result.

  • Avoid straining on the toilet as much as possible.  Do not read or do anything that may prolong the time spent sitting on the toilet.  Straining can worsen hemorrhoids.

  • Avoid any stool softeners or laxatives.  A softer stool is exactly what you want to avoid.

  • You need to wait at least 2 months before you can expect to see any significant improvement.  If there is no improvement, or worsening of your condition please contact us and come in for an evaluation.  253 572-7120
